ABOUT ST. MARK'S

About Us

We practice a spacious Christianity in which there is room for absolutely everyone - and in which no one has to check their brain (or any other aspect of their life) at the door.  While this approach to Christianity is sometimes challenging (no easy answers), it is based on our confidence in God's compassion and faithfulness. We also trust God to continue revealing truth while we live with and respect questions and the variety of responses we each feel called to make. At St. Mark's there is a freedom to believe and even for your belief to change as the seasons of your life unfold.

We offer an expanding array of worship services, educational, spiritual and service programs to fit the interests and schedules of busy people. Additionally, St. Mark's serves as a community gathering place for groups and individuals in the Santa Ynez Valley Region.

St. Mark's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church is a Christian community in the Anglican* tradition centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, allowing us to see God in all that is around us.

Our mission as members of the Church and as a whole community is to:
> Be a people of hospitality in the name of Christ.
> Be a nurturing and healing strength for all people
> Be a community of prayer, centered on the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist.
> Proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the world through word and action.

* "Anglican" churches (The Episcopal Church in the United States) are autonomous but related to the Church of England.  They are intentionally comprehensive, including both catholic and protestant elements and work to bridge religious and social differences.  The Episcopal Church is often known as the "bridge" church.  The Episcopal Church is democratically self-governing.  Ordained and lay persons who have authority in the church are elected by people in the pews.
