Sunday School, grades K through 5
Sundays 9:45 am - 10:45 am
The Sunday school program offered at St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley is for children in grades 1 through 5. Specific curriculum varies depending upon age, but, in general, all curricula supports children’s efforts to make sense of scripture and church practices with engaging resources and activities.
In addition to Childcare, the classes are grouped based on who comes regularly and week-to-week.
A group of volunteer adult and older youth teachers serves the Sunday School. Teachers receive training and orientation to the teaching task and the curriculum.
Sunday School curriculum offers scripture-based lessons that follow the scripture readings used in church Sunday by Sunday and helps children to develop an understanding of the church year and its seasons.
Children work with teachers and peers identifying ideas and inspiration presented in the Bible stories applied to current times. Lessons aim to discern the movement of the Spirit of God in our daily lives.
The curriculum is fun, relevant and contemporary using technology, language, and active learning concepts that match our 21st Century lives. Each lesson uses creativity, collaboration, and humor synonymous with thought-provoking, Bible-based learning.
For example, several lessons include activities for exploring the church buildings and experiencing the life of the faith community. In some grades, the use of animated characters helps to engage children in the questions and challenges inherent in living out one’s faith. In addition, learner leaflets double as take-home pieces with several ways families can put their faith into action throughout the week and engage a family conversation about faith development.
