Sunday School, grades K through 6

Program Year: September 10, 2017 through May 20, 2018
9:45 am -12:00 pm

Summer Months: May 27, 2018 through September 9, 2018
Sundays 8:50-10:30 am

The Sunday school programs offered at St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley are for children in grades K through 6. Specific curriculum varies depending upon age, but, in general, all curricula supports children’s efforts to make sense of scripture and church practices with engaging resources and activities.

In addition to the Nursery, the graded classes are Pre-K-K, 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, 5th-6th and they meet in the classrooms also used by our preschool as well as in the parlor.

A substantial cadre of volunteer teachers serves the Sunday School. Teachers receive training and orientation to the teaching task and the curriculum specifically from our Christian Formation Coordinator. The Coordinator also supports the teachers and assists in classroom organization and resources on Sundays. A team of four teachers works consistently through the year with the “Tween” class (5th and 6th grades). A larger group of teachers serves the lower grades with a higher degree of rotation.

Sunday School curriculum offers scripture-based lessons that follow the Revised Common Lectionary (the plan of scripture readings used in church Sunday by Sunday) and helps children to develop an understanding of the church year and its seasons.

Children work with teachers and peers identifying ideas and inspiration presented in the Bible stories applied to current times. Lessons aim to discern the movement of the Spirit of God in our daily lives.

The curriculum is fun, relevant and contemporary using technology, language, and active learning concepts that match our 21st Century lives. Each lesson uses creativity, collaboration, and humor synonymous with thought-provoking, Bible-based learning.

For example, several lessons include activities for exploring the church buildings and experiencing the life of the faith community.  In some grades, the use of animated characters helps to engage children in the questions and challenges inherent in living out one’s faith.  In addition, learner leaflets double as take-home pieces with several ways families can put their faith into action throughout the week and engage a family conversation about faith development.

TWEENS 5th  – 6th Grade
Program Year: September 10, 2017 through May 20, 2018
9:45 am -12:00 pm

Summer Months: May 27, 2018 through September 9, 2018
Sundays 8:50-10:30 am

Children in the 5th and 6th grades use a curriculum that encourages them to ask questions, make connections and reflect on stories in a presentation for their preteen age group.   They are introduced to God’s big story through videos, Bible explorations, and hands-on project-based activities.  The curriculum explores the themes found in the Bible’s greatest stories and encourages preteens to see the narrative arc of the Bible using a delivery that blends theology with quirky humor. Each week, Tweens focus on and reinforce a theme by watching a witty video, exploring biblical text, and creating projects that range from games to art and more.
